My soul endures to speak changed forms into new bodies;
you gods (for you have all changed, also them)
breathe for my undertakings, and from the first origin of the world
lead down perpetual songs to my time!
Before both the land and sea, because the sky covered everything
There used to be one expression of nature in the entire world,
Whom they say was chaos: a crude and unorderly mass
Not anything except inert weight and collected,
Discordant seeds of things not well joined to the same.
No Titan was providing light(s) for the world up to now,
Neither was Phoebe renewing new horns for growing
Nor was the earth hanging in the surrounding air having
Been balanced by her own right, nor had Amphitrite stretched
Her forearms in the borders of the earth;
As there was both the land and sea and air,
Thus unstable was the earth, the waves were unnavigable,
Air needing light; her own shape of nothing was remaining,
And some thing was blocking another for the rest of them, because in one body
The cold things were fighting the hot things, the wet things were fighting the dry things, soft things were fighting hard things, things without weight were fighting things having weight. 20
The god and better nature separated strife.
For he cut earth from sky and waves from earth,
And he separated the liquid sky from the thick air.
Which afterwards he unfolded and removed them from the dark heap,
He tied unassociated things in place with like-minded peace:
The fiery force appeared suddenly and without weight of the carried sky
And made a place for herself in the highest height;
The air is nearest to her in lightness in place;
The earth was denser than these and both attracted grand elements
And it was compressed by her own gravity; The flowing around liquid
Owned the final elements and restrained the solid sphere.
Thus, whoever made the deposited gods cut off a heap and collected it in a division,
The beginning of the earth, not equal to a part piercing a whole,
he gathered these spectacles into the earth.
